2018 Rink Update

18/10/2018

Your dedicated group of volunteers spent approximately 30 hours setting up the rink tarps on Monday and Tuesday of this week.  We should be able to start flooding once the weather becomes more winter like.  Although nobody likes a long winter, it is great for outdoor rinks!  Please stay off the tarps until the rink is ready.  Thank you.

You may be able to see the rolled tarps at the edges of the rink.  The late season wind storms last year almost did the rink in.  The tarps were heavily damaged and nearly blew off the site!  This year, we have rolled the tarp edges around boards and screwed the boards into the ground for the entire perimeter of the rink.  Hopefully this will keep the tarp in place until we can flood.

Did you know an Alberta Government through a Community Initiatives Program "CIP" grant has a been a major contributor to our rink over the last two years?  Once the initial grading was performed, the CIP grant enabled us to complete the grading and lay down 6 inches of top soil over the entire rink.  In 2017, we brought in 30 truck loads of loam to cover up the exposed clay.  Brian's Bobcat also came through with a huge donation of services which enabled us to extend the grant funding to partially cover our expenses this year!  Hats off to the Alberta Government and Brian's Bobcat!  This project would not have gone forward without their generous contributions.

We finished up the grade with another truck load of top soil spread by hand just before school started this year!  All together, your rink volunteers have put in over 400 hours of hard work in mostly cold weather since December 2016.

Anyone up for a winter of fun and camaraderie?  Please email [email protected] if you would like to help out.  We do have a fire hose and a gas powered snow blower with heated handles!  Appropriate winter gear is definitely required.
